Joe Niland will begin his 18th year as head coach of the University of Mobile men’s basketball team in 2016-17. Niland has racked up 316 career wins with the Rams (316-223) and is 443-283 overall in 22 seasons as a head coach. Niland has guided the Rams to five NAIA National Tournament appearances and also serves as the school’s athletic director, overseeing 17 athletics programs.

Alma Mater: Stillman College

Willie Burns Jr. has spent six  seasons as an assistant coach for the Rams. He brings with him more than 22 years of teaching and coaching experience after serving as the head varsity boys’ basketball coach at Rain, Blount, Vigor, Citronelle and Williamson. Burns led Blount to five 5A Area Championships and Vigor to a 6A Area Championship in 2006. He was named Mobile Press-Register and Mobile Optimist Club Coach of the Year in 1994 and 2009.

Burns graduated from Stillman College with a degree in physical education and resides in Mobile. He is married to Twilla Long Burns and has four children (Thaddeus, Chelsea, Amanda and Olivia) and two grandchildren (Vera and Landen). He also has a M. Ed. in physical education.

Jason Templet will begin his second season as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Mobile men’s basketball team after compiling three seasons of high school coaching experience at St. Mary’s Catholic (La.) and Christian Life Academy (La.).
