SECAUCUS, N.J. – University of Mobile junior pitcher, Lukas Young, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 21st round at the 2017 MLB Draft.

"I want to thank God for giving me the talents I have today and my family for being there with me throughout this journey," said Young. "I would also like to thank my coaches at Bishop Community College for giving me the opportunity to play after high school and for Coach Jacobs and Coach Seymour at UM for giving me the chance to play after junior college.

In 2017, Young went 8-4 on the season with a 2.63 era. He pitched in 15 games with 14 starts. He tossed 92.1 innings, allowing just 71 hits, 32 runs (27 earned), walked 18 and he struck out 86. Young also picked up a save.

"We are very proud of Lukas," said University of Mobile baseball head coach Mike Jacobs. "He worked really hard last summer before he came to UM. After he got here he did a great job in the classroom, as well as on the field. His work ethic was great. He was an example to our entire team. Lukas was a fierce competitor on the field, he loved to compete against the best. He was also an encouragement to our team when he was not on the mound. We will miss him, but God has other plans for Lukas and we are okay with that."

Lukas led the Southern States Athletic Conference in ERA (2.63), hits allowed per game (6.9), opponent batting average (0.211), second in runs allowed (32), earned runs allowed (27), third in innings pitched per game (6.1), fourth in total innings pitched (92.1), batters struck out (86), sixth in walks allowed per game (1.7), seventh in batters struck out per game (8.3), wins (8) and eighth in walks allowed (18).

Young becomes the 15th Ram to be drafted in the draft and the 4th pitcher in the last three years to be selected.
